La Risata Ampang, Kuala Lumpur

Casual by Day, Grand by Night

A food and beverage operation can attribute much of its success to the design and layout of its venue. La Risata Ampang is the 5,000 plus square feet flagship Italian restaurant for the La Risata group.

The Challenge

The owner wanted to create an inviting and casual atmosphere that allows neighbourhood patrons on the main thoroughfare to stroll in, while also having features suitably grand enough to host formal events and functions.

The Solution

CDG took advantage of the project’s greatest assets—the double-storey shop lots and site itself—to create a huge central space with skylights to mimic an alfresco atmosphere. A classic chandelier and antique timber doors add both charm and added versatility to the space. Dining tables on tracks can be joined together to cater to larger groups. Tables can also be raised to kitchen counter height for cooking demonstrations. Collapsible function rooms and a private loft area on the mezzanine floor enable additional atmospheres to be created for private functions.

The Daily Grind, Bangsar Village 2, Kuala Lumpur

Creative Spacing, Playful Themes

Relocating a restaurant to a new site can be a major factor for a business’ growth. CDG helped put The Daily Grind, a gourmet burger chain, on the fast-track to making a smooth transition with a venue change.

The Challenge

The client wanted to maximise the opportunity to revamp its image while maintaining the restaurant’s unique character. One major consideration was accommodating a varied group of patrons – families with children, teens, and adults who drink and smoke at the bar.

The Solution

We designed the restaurant to include separate zones, so groups who want a cosy, smoke-free environment could sit comfortably adjacent to others who want to dine and smoke. We created a meat-grinder inspired wall theme by utilising a collection of pipes, cogs, gears and various machinery parts to illustrate the story of how meat patties are produced. This versatility in dining options and creative theme made The Daily Grind a favourite choice for various events and functions from children’s birthday parties to formal corporate functions. This case study is a classic example of how space planning and use of interesting elements can give the restaurant the extra edge. It is not always only about the food!

A Jazzy Upgrade

Alexis Bistro & Jazz Club was originally designed as a bistro and wine bar with a central wood pizza oven. It had quite a large dining space, a private dining room for functions, lounge areas, and alfresco seating. In time, the clients started organising jazz performances and a stage was added. As weekend jazz performances grew popular, lighting and sound were added.

The Challenge

The client wanted to upgrade and refurbish the existing restaurant to achieve a more mature, cosier feel, and to create a proper jazz club. At the same time, the client wanted to improve the venue acoustics, while maximising the audience’s view of the stage.

The Solution

In collaboration with Unit One Design Sdn Bhd, we focused the design around the stage. The dining spaces and private dining room were reorganised to fully maximise the view of the stage. Wine display racks were articulated with fine detailing and lit with LED strip lighting to highlight the restaurateur’s fine collection. The original terrazzo floor was covered with solid timber strips stained dark to add to the character and help with sound absorption.

Mezze Bistro & Lounge, Damansara, Kuala Lumpur

Mezze Bistro & Wine Bar

Mezze was originally a Bistro and Wine Bar located on the ground floor of a 3 storey row of shophouses. The client approached us to upgrade their restaurant and to extend their operations to the first floor.

The Challenge

The client wanted to create the first floor lounge and wine bar as a destination with its own distinct character – contemporary but with enough plush and classic comfort. Their target was for more mature patrons who could call this place their second home! The original bistro needed a larger kitchen and a facelift but at the same time we had to retain the original essence of the place. The biggest challenge for to get the new lounge and bistro up and running with minimal business downtime!

The Solution

The bar on the first floor was built under a light well which we closed up to create a double volume space. This become the main feature and the focus point of this space. Wine racks lit with LED lights, were displayed along the entire stretch of the opposing wall as a backdrop to the entire setting. The private lounge was on raised platform that was shared with the stage. Steel and glass sliding doors, coupled with curtains, allowed private functions to be organised. Extensive use of thick curtains, vinyl clad walls and timber flooring, helped with the acoustics of the place. Clever usage of dimmable lights and LEDs, created the perfect mood for performances and events.

On the ground floor, the fairface brick wall of the original bistro was maintained as with the artworks on display to maintain continuity. The dining areas were divided up into more intimate zones with flexible banquette seating to accommodate various seating options. The kitchen was enlarged with a dumb waiter serving the first floor lounge, and an open meat and cheese bar added in as a focus at the deep end of the restaurant. The original bar at the
